TEST FOR BILE PIGMENTS

Aim

To detect the presence of bile pigments in the given sample of urine.

Apparatus

Test tube, Fauchet’s reagent, filter paper

Procedure

This is the most sensitive and best test for bile pigment. If the urine is neutral or alkaline, acidify it with 2 drops of acetic acid. Take 5 ml. of acetic urine in a test tube. Add 5m1. of 10% Bad sol. Mix well and filter for the precipitate, add one drop of Fauchet’s reagent to the precipitate on the filter paper. If bile pigment is present a green or blue colourwill be formed.

Causes of Hyperbilirubinurea

Moderate to severe hepatocellular damage and obstruction of bile duct.
